Frog Music
From the Casual Amplexus liner notes:
"Casual Amplexus refers to the position whereby a frog or other individual might indiscriminately grasp another about the waist, the stem of a mushroom, or time itself. With frogs, it is generally executed to reproduce many more and is usually not so casual. In other cases, it represents an attempt to hold on. The music contained within this recording is made with frogs. That is, most of the sounds were constructed using frog and toad samples and a Kurzweil K2500. Some of the sounds are unaltered calls and some are incognito as xylophones, bases, electric pianos, and other invented instrument timbres and atmospheric sounds. The "band" on Blues In Frog for example, is comprised of instruments that are modeled from frog calls using the transformational magic of digital audio. The cymbal is actually a sped-up and distorted recording of narrow-mouthed toads. Some of the compositions themselves were inspired and structured by the sound of a chorus of amphibian nighttime communicators. Many such anuran ensembles are very sophisticated rhythmically interweaving complex polyrhythms which roam in and out of phase. Maggots and Mushrooms and The U in Dubya are examples of these. Amphibians were the first entities on the planet to vocalize. The motivation behind such primordial chorales was Casual Amplexus."
